Dr. Nicolette (Nicci) Roux
Dr. Nicolette (Nicci) Roux is a Fellow of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer at Kambu Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Health.
She completed her MB ChB degree in 2004 at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and moved to Australia in 2008, four (4) years post‑graduation, with a commitment to practice medicine in regional, rural and underserved communities.
Over the past 12 years, Dr. Nicci has dedicated her clinical career to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, undertaking Advanced Specialist Training in this field. Prior to her current role, she held key positions at an ACCHO in Far North Queensland, including Senior General Practitioner with specialised training in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and later the Executive Director of Medical Services.
Dr. Nicci has a special interest in Child and Maternal Health as well as Women's Health. Her dedication to health equity and social justice is strongly shaped by her South African upbringing during the National Reconciliation period and inspired by the leadership of Nelson Mandela. These influences underpin her deep commitment to culturally safe, community‑led care and her advocacy for the integral role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners within multidisciplinary teams.
Dr. Nicci’s approach to care is profoundly patient‑centred grounded in cultural humility, respect, and partnership. She believes that the best health outcomes emerge when care is informed by each patient’s story, identity, and community, and she works closely with Health Workers and Practitioners to ensure cultural knowledge meaningfully guides each patient journey.
In addition to her clinical and leadership roles, Dr. Nicci is passionate about medical education and strengthening the next generation of rural and First Nations health practitioners. She is actively involved in teaching and supervising medical students, GP registrars, and junior doctors.
In recognition of her dedication to mentoring and developing future clinicians, Dr. Nicci was awarded an Adjunct title with James Cook University for her contributions to education and support of General Practitioners.
Dr. Nicci continues to champion culturally grounded, equitable, and community‑connected health care—guided by her belief that true health advancement comes through partnership, respect, and the empowerment of communities.
