Today, Sunday 17 May 2026, we observe International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). May 17 marks the date in 1990 that homosexuality was removed from the WHO Classification of Diseases. It is a day to stand together, speak up, and celebrate every member of our LGBTQIA+ community.
The reality is sobering:
2 in 3 LGBTQIA+ young people experience abuse because of who they are.
35% of LGBTQIA+ Australians faced verbal abuse in the last 12 months alone.
We can all do better. Here are some ideas for showing up as an ally:
Add your pronouns to your email signature & workplace profiles
Be a safe space — listen, affirm, and stand beside your queer community
Wear a rainbow today and every day
This year we're proud to spotlight the BlaQ Aboriginal Corporation's “Still Here Still Queer” campaign that uplifts and celebrates the strength, identity and resilience of Queer Blaq people across Australia. Three of these incredible voices are:
Bee Cruse (She/Her, Lesbian) — Kamilaroi, Wiradjuri & Yuin-Monaro Cultural Storyteller and filmmaker.
Sami Doku (She/Her, Trans Woman) — Warumungu & Wombaya woman and fierce BlaQ advocate.
Jasmin Sarin (She/Her, Lesbian) — Kamilaroi & Jerrinja woman, firefighter, and award-winning artist.
Today and every day, visibility matters.
