World Heart Day
Today, Tuesday 29 September 2026, is World Heart Day. The theme for 2026 is "Don't Miss A Beat” and aims to raise awareness on how to recognise the signs and symptoms of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD).
Facts about CVD:
High blood pressure often has no symptoms until a hear attack occurs
1 in 3 of us are killed by heart disease
50% of babies born with Coronary Heart Disease are not diagnosed at birth
1 in 5 people will die prematurely from heart disease
CVD can affect anyone regardless of age, fitness or lifestyle. While symptoms are often invisible and vary depending on the type of cardivascular disease, here are some symptoms to look out for:
Chest pain, chest tightness, chest pressure and chest discomfort
Pain, weakness or numbness in your legs and/or arms
Pain or discomfort in the arms, neck, shoulder, jaw and back
Shortness of breath
Easily tiring during exercise or activity
Changes in your heart rhythm
Very fast or slow heartbeat, palpitations or fluttering in your chest
Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting
Some risk factors associated with heart disease are:
unhealthy diet
physical inactivity
tobacco use
harmful use of alcohol
