Maria Baker
DIRECTOR
Maria Baker (née Pickering) is a proud Wakka Wakka Elder and lifelong Ipswich resident who brings strength, wisdom, and heart to her role on the Kambu Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Health Board of Directors.
Maria was elected in 2022 to the Board of Directors and is passionate about being a voice for Elders. Her connection to Kambu Health dates back to the 1970s, and she continues to support the organisation not just for her own healthcare, but for the community connection it offers.
Born into a large family and raised in Ipswich, Maria built her home in Ripley in 1977 with her husband Neil, where they raised four (4) sons. She worked at JB Swift for 40 years and is a Life Member of the Queensland Trades Unions and the West End Footy Club.
Maria brings to this role vast experience from sitting on various boards and panels, including the Bremer State High School Indigenous Advisory Board and the Indigenous Liaison Officer Recruitment Panel for Queensland Police – Ipswich.
She also proudly served as a union delegate for 25 years.
Maria values the relationships built through Kambu Health and believes Elders play a vital role in guiding younger generations. She sees every day as a chance to share knowledge, build connections, and give back to her community.
“I’m proud to be an Elder and to still be learning. Kambu is more than a health service—it’s about our people.”
As Kambu Health approaches its 50th anniversary in 2026, Maria remains committed to helping shape a strong, culturally safe future for all.
