Happy International Day of the Midwife!
Today we celebrate the incredible midwives around the world who show up every single day, in hospitals, communities, and even in the most difficult, fragile settings, to bring life into the world with skill, dignity, and heart.
But today is also a call to action.
Right now, the world is one million midwives short. That's one million gaps in care for women and babies who deserve better. Too many mothers are still dying from preventable causes. Too many newborns don't make it. Too many women are giving birth without someone in their corner, someone who sees them, respects them, and keeps them safe.
Midwives change all of that.
Skilled midwifery care could prevent:
67% of maternal deaths
64% of newborn deaths and 65% of stillbirths
Midwives can deliver 90% of essential sexual and reproductive health services
They support breastfeeding, provide family planning, and they show up in conflict zones and disaster areas when health systems fall apart.
To every midwife out there, thank you!
