International Mother Language Day, Saturday 21 February 2026

On 21 February 2026, we acknowledge International Mother Language Day and celebrate the strength and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages across Australia. Before colonisation, more than 250 distinct languages were spoken across this continent — today, communities are leading powerful efforts to protect, revitalise and pass them on to future generations.

Language carries culture, law, Songlines, humour and deep connections to Country — it is living knowledge. From Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) in Queensland to the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory, Aboriginal-guided experiences share language in ways that are grounded, contextual and deeply connected to place. Through organisations like Discover Aboriginal Experiences, visitors are immersed in living languages spoken on Country, woven into storytelling, Welcome to Country, song and ceremony.

Initiatives such as Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School remind us that language revival is about more than words — it’s about restoring knowledge systems, identity and community wellbeing.

Today, we honour the voices that have carried these languages for tens of thousands of years — and the generations ensuring they remain strong, lived and thriving.
